I’m Self-Published: What I Learned About It

I’ve started to get few questions not just about my book, but how did I get there? What is self-publishing like?  How do I start?

I’m certainly no self-publishing Yoda (not by a long shot).  But, I did do it all on my own.  Me and Google.  Here’s a few things I learned:

  1. Finish your book FIRST. This seems kind of self-explanatory, but when I really started researching publishing on the Big 3 (Amazon, iBooks, and B&N) – I was still a few chapters from the end.  I set a pre-sale date and I was going to make it damnit. I just ended up confused as hell.
  2. After you finish your book, proofread, edit, rewrite, and then do that all again 5 more times (or more!).  Use the mental health breaks in between these to take care of the next few tips.
  3. Signing up to sell with the Big 3 takes time.  At least get your accounts set up early.  They have to do IRS Tax Verification and everything, so get this done around a month before you plan to go live.
  4. I created my own book cover.  A LOT of people do this and it doesn’t work – at all.  I was 99% certain I was going to pay a professional to do it and then mine clicked for me.  For my next book, I  will most likely outsource this work.  It. Was. Hard.  (Unless you’re a Photoshop pro, then by all means…)
Here’s My Final Cover

5. Do NOT leave your book description until the last minute.  Remember these 3 things – Book Cover, Book Description, and Social Media.  These three things will sell your book.  Pro Tip: Google “Metadata”.

This is definitely not a comprehensive list.  There’s a lot more in my head that I’ll include in another post if you guys like.  Don’t forget to like and follow.  Comment to let me know if you’d like to hear more.
